Our eighth and final week of AKIS Summer School 2025 has been successfully completed.
On Tuesday, we learned about Sudan and cooked “bamihya”(okra stew). We again needed to cut onions… so when the children saw the onions, some of them ran to get swim goggles to protect their eyes from the onion vapors. We talked about the Sudanese custom of eating food with the right hand. The students were so excited about this because they are often told not to eat with their hands. Some of them said, “We need to keep this a secret from mom and dad!” We teachers said that they may use their hand to eat only the Sudanese food which we had cooked in class. However, many of them ate their school lunch with their hand as well.

On Wednesday, we learned about Australia. We made a boomerang in the morning and a didgeridoo in the afternoon. Since our school’s and our parent-company’s mascot character is a koala (his name is Cruzo), we all went up to our parent-company’s office to see him and say “Hi!”

On Thursday, we learned about the Marshall Islands. The students made “amimono”, and they were amazed its name is a Japanese word.

On Friday, the last day of our Summer School program, we learned about Armenia. We cooked “gata”, a special Armenian sweet. We mixed flour, sugar, butter, yoghurt , etc, to make it. We then set a special table to celebrate the last day of this year’s AKIS Summer School and ate the gata for our final party treat! Everyone seemed to like it. We then asked the students, “Which country would you like to visit?”, and they answered “America! Sudan! Vanuatu!”, etc.

We hope these program experiences were an enjoyable opportunity for all the students to learn more about our world. Thank you very much to everyone who participated.
We are planning to hold AKIS Winter School as well! We hope to see you again, and please invite your friends to join, too!
