We have been learning about fruits and vegetables since we went grape-picking.

This week, we started talking about the different food groups. We took out all the toy food from our kitchen center and sorted each of them into their food group.

We also learned to sing the “Food Pyramid” song. The students enjoyed sorting out the food and singing about the food groups. We talked about the top of the pyramid: it is a very small triangle because it is the “treats” group (the oils, sweets, and nuts group) which means we should eat only a little of these treats and we should eat a lot of the grains, vegetables and fruits groups.

Everyone then said they would rather eat a lot of treats instead. One of the boys said we should switch the food pyramid so that the bottom part is the treats group and the top part is the grains group.

The Whale class students even sorted our school lunch into the food groups to see whether our school lunch contains all the food groups food or not. They said it does not have any food in the “treats food group” so it is not a good lunch…
