This week we spent time learning about different kinds of fruit. The Penguin and Starfish Classes read and sang songs about their favorite story – The Very Hungry Caterpillar – while learning the names of different fruits. We made our own ‘very hungry caterpillar’ and fed him lots of toy-food from the kitchen corner, and we also made fruit by tearing paper and making the pieces into little balls of ‘food’.

The Seal Class students played ‘fruit dominoes’ and ‘fruit basket’ games with friends from the Whale and Shark Classes. They are starting to learn how to take turns and to understand the rules of a game.

The Whale Class students sorted fruits by season (which was really difficult — we researched it using computers and books). One boy said that he saw ‘candied apples’ being sold at o-matsuri (a festival) which he went to during summer, and so he insisted that apples are a summer fruit. So we discussed it: “Are apples are a summer fruit? autumn fruit? winter fruit? Even the teachers had differing opinions! Then we began to think about where different kinds of fruit grow—on trees? in the ground? on vines? And so on. Because of these activities, we wanted to grow more fruit! So we dug into different kinds of fruit and found their seeds. We couldn’t find any banana seeds though. Now, what should we do with the seeds we have found?
