The children have been learning about animals this month, and this week they began learning about sea creatures. The children love the “Baby Shark” song, so of course the first sea creature we learned about was the shark.

Seal Class students cut sharp shark’s teeth with scissors (to practice cutting on a line) and after they finished, they played with their shark’s mouth that they could open and close. Starfish Class students cut out paper shark’s teeth with scissors. Our Starfish students are currently in a “cutting-with-scissors craze”, so they cut out lots and lots of teeth. Children in the Penguin Class also stuck eyes, fins, and other body parts onto their shark.

The Whale Class students made a life-size shark by taping together sheets of newspaper after researching the size of a real shark. According to one book, a shark is 6 meters long. Our measuring tape can only measure up to 4 meters, so they managed to measure out 6 meters by using addition and subtraction (with a teacher’s help, since 1 meter is 100 centimeters…).

One day a boy from the Starfish Class brought a snail to school. Everybody was so excited to see it.  For some of them, it was their first time to see a live snail. The Whale Class students researched to learn its preferred habitat and food, and then they made a special case for it. Other students made snails from clay, paper, etc. Some of them even named it “Kata-chan”.
