April 22 was Earth Day and we learned how to sort trash into “plastic”, “paper”, “metal”, and “glass”. We also made the “Earth” — Penguin, Starfish, and Seal Class students painted a round paper plate and then Starfish and Penguin students tore up green paper to make the land while Seal students cut green paper with scissors to make the land. They all love looking at the globe and world map. Whale Class students painted “marbleized” paper to make their Earth. They lifted their paper from the water and they all said “Wow!!!” when they saw the special marbled pattern.

Another activity we did was to check recyclable materials for their recycling symbols. Whale Class students learned that recycling symbols appear on lots of everyday items and this helps us to identify the different types of packaging that can be recycled. After that, we searched for those symbols and cut them out. We found so many of those symbols! Some of our friends even said “I found one!” whenever they found one later on during the week!

Whale Class students were shown photos of the Earth’s destruction caused by people, and thought about how we can help to save our Earth. Mr. H said, “By recycling”, and Mr. Y said, “We need garbage trucks (to remove the garbage).”  During STEAM Class (our afternoon special activity class), the students made a filter to make “dirty water” become “clean water”. We learned the word “sewage” is a kind of dirty water. We hope everyone has become interested in how we can “Help Our Planet Earth” now and into the future.
